‘best town in the country’
land have been zoned for tourism use, which could cater for a hotel. The Village Renewal and the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme funding are being put to excellent use and we hope that these improvements will enhance the tourism opportunities for Rathdrum and bring walkers and cyclists over from Glendalough,’ he said.
Cllr Kennedy said that employment opportunities are also on the increase and outlined that there are 60 people in full time employment in animal health company Zoetis with another 100 on two year contracts.
The icing on the cake in recent days was Rathdrum receiving a national Pride of Place Award for the best town in the country in the 1000 – 2000 Population category.
The award was a huge boost to the community and acknowledged the large amount of work which has been put in over many months.
Presenting the award to Rathdrum the judges said ‘This is a small town on the move – there is hope, confidence and a realisation of the potential of some major tourist attractions. The community has decided to take its future in its own hands. There is significant support from the council and politicians, which was clearly signalled on the day of the judges’ visit. The visit itself featured a powerful presentation, an excellent video and a visit to an historical famine graveyard (lovingly maintained). Historical landmarks have been signposted and woodland walks constructed along with attractive street furniture and hanging baskets. The judges can confidently predict a great future for this warm and welcoming town.’
Cllr Kennedy said that the award is a fabulous achievement and testament to Rathdrum and its people.
‘This award shows that we are moving forward in a real and meaningful way. From now on, whenever people search for Rathdrum be it online or through other channels, they will see this vote of confi- dence in the town. It highlights Rathdrum as a place to work, set up a home and rear families,’ he said.
