Professed as Carmelite nun

Gwen Collins of Killarney Glen, Dargle Road, was professed as a nun in the enclosed Carmelite Order at St Mary’s in Delgany.

Sister Gwen is the daughter of Bernard and Lily Collins and is well known in Bray as a teacher and in sporting circles.

Educated at St Bridget’s in Greystones, the Dominican Convent in Dun Laoghaire, and Loreto Convent in Bray, she went on to qualify as a teacher at the training college in Sion Hill, Blackrock. She taught for five years at Presentati­on College, Bray.

She is very well known through her participat­ion in camogie in County Wicklow, as a member of the internatio­nal hockey team and membership of the Bray Rowing Club.

She was also a member of the Bray Hunt and took park in many gymkhana events. She was also at one time a member of St Peter’s Youth Club in Little Bray and an organiser of cub scouts in PResentati­on College. In between all that community and sporting activity, Sister Gwen found time to make a trip to Australia.

Joining her at the ceremony, which saw her making her final vows, were her parents, family and close friends.
