All Ireland boxing joy for Enniskerry’s Sean

Sean clinches All-Ireland crown

- All-Ireland Senior final

ENNISKERRY BOXING CLUB had a very busy and very successful weekend just gone. On Friday night at the National Stadium, Sean Purcell won an All-Ireland Senior title at 56kg.

Sean was in hugely impressive form over the past fortnight. At the quarter-final stages The Enniskerry Boxing Club member stopped Dean McCormack of Whitechurch in round two with a devastating body shot.

Again, in the semi-final the Enniskerry boxer found superb form to defeat Mark Corcoran of Corinthian’s BC in a 5-0 unanimous decision. Sean dropped his opponent and Corcoran was forced into taking two standing counts.

And so, to Friday night’s final against Conor Kerr of Monkstown, Co. Antrim. On a night of exceptional boxing with many of Ireland’s most promising boxers on display, Sean was certainly in contention for performance of the night.

In Kerr he faced an extremely durable opponent but showed enough skill and speed to emerge with the Irish title on another unanimous 5-0 card.

On Saturday it was the turn of two-time European champion Daina Moorehouse to make her season’s debut in Arklow in a Leinster v Dublin tournament.

Daina was facing a familiar rival in Smithfield BCs Ciara Walsh. It was a great workout for both girls with Daina emerging victorious on a unanimous 5-0 decision. Daina, who is sponsored by Shoreline, Bray, under their Athletic Spon- sorship Programme has been putting in the hard work in their gym as well as her usual club activities, declared herself delighted to return to winning ways after the World Championships in Hungary.

With club coaches Paul O’Toole and Eve Carr in her corner it was back to basics as she gears up for another successful season ahead.

‘Enniskerry BC would also like to congratulate Kellie Harrington on her incredible achievement on becoming World Champion in India.

‘Kellie is a superb role model and has been a big support to both Daina and Eve in particular,’ said a club spokesperson.
