Wicklow boxers shine for Leinster
WICKLOW girls were in flying form last weekend as they helped Leinster to a 8-6 victory over Dublin in an all-female boxing tournament held in Arklow Boxing Club last Saturday.
Enniskerry Boxing Club’s Daina Moorehouse, Arklow Boxing Club’s Niamh Molloy Arklow, Kaci Rock of Four Kings and Alex Dickenson from Rathnew Boxing Club all had their hands held in victory in a packed house with electric atmosphere in Arklow Boxing club.
The Leinster girls squad consisted of girls from Wicklow, Wexford, Carlow, Kildare, Westmeath and Laois.
Rathnew’s Alex Dickenson got proceedings underway with an impressive 3-0 win using her reach to score well with two to three-punch combinations.
With the overall score reading 2-2, Niamh Molloy, from Arklow Boxing Club, was up next and was in control of all three rounds against a good opponent, but Niamh’s eye-catching backhand gave her a deserved win.
At the interval the score stood at Leinster 3, Dublin 3. Leinster won the next three bouts in good style, but Dublin fought back and won the following three to level matters once again.
With just two bouts bouts left the pressure was on. Kaci Rock from Four Kings in Greystones was involved in an action packed three-rounder where both girls stood toe to toe throughout and the crowd got behind them in what was probably the contest of the day with Kaci getting the nod on a split decision.
Enniskerry’s Daina Moorehouse was the last bout of the afternoon. The current European champion had a convincing win over her opponent. Daina’s speed, footwork and three-punch attacks earned her a comprehensive 3-0 victory.
All credit must go the Leinster officials led by Arklow Boxing Cclub coach Linda Morgan who is the director of boxing of Leinster Ladies development team and who was responsible for matching the contests as well as all aspects of hosting such a prestigious event. Dublin were also very sporting in defeat and look forward to the return in the near future.
All roads lead again to Arklow Boxing Club on Sunday next, December 9, at 2pm where all the clubs in Co. Wicklow box in a test match tournament.
Clubs involved are Arklow, Wicklow, Rathnew, Enniskerry, Four Kings, Liberty, Bray, St Teresa’s Bray. 37 contests are matched, and two rings will be in action. Admission is €5. Doors open at 1.15pm.
