Massive weekend for boxing in the county

Clubs of Wicklow come together for the first time

-

FOR the first time in their history all seven clubs in County Wicklow took part in a boxing extravaganza in Arklow Boxing Club last Sunday.

The boxers were of all ages from underage (8) to senior and included boys and girls, with six champions in action.

The clubs were Arklow, Enniskerry, Four Kings, Liberty, St Teresa’s, Rathnew, and Wicklow. Two rings were in operation with Alister Crowley and Eoin Pluck refereeing the bouts.

First in action were Daniel White and Leo McCalum from Arklow and both boys gave a good display.

Terry O’Brien from Enniskerry, Sean Byrne from Arklow and Pat Martin of St Teresa’s were involved in a hectic three-way bout and all three fought their hearts out.

Also in a three-way bout were Johnny Lynch from Enniskerry, Tadgh Cahill of St Teresa’s and Matthew Kavanagh from Wicklow and they had a tremendous battle, with all three boys showing a lot of skill.

Another three-way bout with Cody Robinson from Arklow, Seoirce O’Brien, also from Arklow, and Jamie Kane of St Teresa’s and all three were impressive for their first outing for their clubs.

An impressive display of boxing came from two girls, Arklow’s Niamh Molloy, and Rathnew’s Alex Dickenson, with both displaying great boxing skills and this was no surprise as both girls are part of the Leinster development squad and are improving all the time.

Also on the Leinster panel is Jody Byrne of St Teresa’s who had a great workout with Jade Smith from Enniskerry.

Ryan Smiley of Four Kings was on the attack all the time against Arklow’s Daniel Feokrytov in an intriguing bout with the Arklow boy counter punching all the time.

Philip Feokrytov had a tremendous bout with Michael Cash from Wicklow, while Kasper Anderson of Four Kings had a great bout with Mick Tracey from St Teresa’s in an even contest.

Ross Farrell from Arklow had a great scrap with David Ignatescu of Liberty, while Arklow’s Jason Breen had a tremendious tussle with Jake McMahon from Liberty.

This was followed by another cracker with Arklow’s Owen Moore and Liberty’s Daniel Keogh.

Arklow’s Eimhin McCormack had a good bout with Piers Joyce from Four Kings and Arklow’s Tiernan Lockhart had a good bout with Connor Kelly from Wicklow.

In a three-way bout, Daniel Fox and Damien Abiloga from Arklow Boxing Club had a hard bout with Stephen Cain from St Teresa’s.

In the final bout, Arklow’s Padraig Keogh had a great bout with Alan Piegza of St Teresa’s, but it didn’t end there.

Padraig did an extra three- rounds with Mark Tresson from Liberty and put in a great performance.

Padraig will indeed remember Sunday’s tournament.

The boxing action continues next Sunday in Fassaroe Community Centre in Little Bray and is being hosted by Liberty Boxing club.

If Sunday’s outing is anything to go by, this week’s show should be well worth the small admission fee of adults €5 and €2 for under 16s.

Clubs are reminded of the €2 per boxer entry fee. Boxing commences at 2pm.
