St Kevin’s turn on the style to shake off Avondale

- SENIOR ‘B’ CAMOGIE

ST KEVIN’S CC 6-6 AVONDALE CC (AET) 3-3

THE final of the Wicklow Schools senior B camogie was played in Dunlavin on Monday. It proved to be a most exciting game with a high level of commitment and skill despite a heavy pitch.

St Kevin’s started the better with an early Katie Tyrrell point followed by a Daisy Summer Cullen Dunne goal. Avondale soon settled and went ahead with some fine scores by the impressive Kasey Byrne. When referee Declan Peppard blew for half time Avondale led by 3-2 to 2-1.

Both sides gave their all in a thrill packed second half. St Kevin’s had the bulk of possession in this half. Avondale only added a single point in this period but it was to prove almost enough. Katie Tyrrell was winning a lot of midfield possession for the Dunlavin school and setting up her forward line but the Avondale defence were excellent with goalkeeper Ava Whelan outstanding. The margin was still a single point in favour of Avondale when St Kevin’s were awarded a long range free in the last minute. Daisy Summer Cullen Dunne sent it over the bar to bring the game to extra time.

St Kevin’s dominated the extra time period as they attacked from the start. They led by 4-5 to 3-3 at the interval and added a further 1-2 in the second half as the gallant Avondale side tired.

St Kevin’s will now play Colaiste Bhride Carnew in the A final.

Scorers: St Kevin’s: Daisy Summer Cullen Dunne 3-3, Katie Tyrrell 2-3, Emma Hayden 1-0. Avondale CC: Kasey Byrne 2-1, Katie O’Byrne 1-1, Ciara Clancy 0-1
