Garda warning as counterfeit €50 notes in circulation

- By MARY FOGARTY

GARDAI in Bray have sent out a warning as fake €50 notes have been in circulation in the town and district recently.

Bray and District Chamber said that they received information from the local gardai, urging retailers to ‘ look, feel, tilt’.

Look at the banknote against the light. The security thread appears as a dark line.

The € symbol and the value of the banknote can be seen in tiny white lettering in that line

Feel the banknote. On the front, there is a series of short raised lines on the left and right edges

Tilt the banknote. The hologram – the silvery stripe on the right – reveals a portrait of Europa. The stripe also shows the main image and the value of the banknote

Staff should be especially wary of anyone seeking change for €50 notes without purchasing anything and should verify the note is real.

According to gardai, Thursday and Friday evenings were the busiest times for shoplifting over the past three Decembers. This pattern may continue into the sales period in January.

Retailers and members of the public are advised to be extra-vigilant and contact Bray Garda Station if they notice any suspicious activity in their store or around the town.

Bray Garda Station can be contacted on 01 6665300.
