- By DEBORAH COLEMAN

AN Arklow was family was dealt a cruel blow over Christmas as local woman Judith Coughlan tragically died in Spain.

Judith, who was just days away from celebrating her 29th birthday passed away following an accident in Alicante Airport when she fell over an 18 metre-high railing while crossing a footbridge.

It is understood that she was in the airport to catch a flight home to Ireland to visit her father.

Judith relocated to Spain earlier in the year with her partner Shane Fagan and their two young daughters Ava and Daisy.

She was raised in Arklow and attended Arklow Community College. She was a devoted mother and stayed home to look after her beloved daughters.

Judith was the daughter of Brian Coughlan and Corey Bateman from Arklow. Ms Bateman is well known in town for her work with Wicklow County Council. At the time of Judith’s untimely death, her mother and fiancé Jimmy Fealey were due to be married in Australia. An investigation into what happened to Judith at the busy Spanish aiport was launched by the local authorities.

A cremation service took place in Spain in recent days and it is expected that a memorial service will take place at a later date in Ireland. When news of the incident filtered out, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that it was providing consular assistance to Ms Coughlan’s family.
