Brazen dumpers drop black bags by ‘no dumping’ sign

-

THE SCENIC South Wicklow countryside was blighted by illegal dumping just days before the end of the year.

The fly-tipping was discovered by a member of the public at Kilcavan Gap, a busy road on the outskirts of the village between Carnew and Arklow.

There was a large volume of domestic waste dumped in bags which burst open and spread across one side of road.

The incident which blatantly flouted littering bye-laws took place right beside a ‘No Dumping’ sign erected by Wicklow County Council.

According to Baltinglass Municipal District Councillor Vincent Blake, such incidents are unfortunately all too common in the area.

‘We are hearing about such incidents all the time and we regularly receive calls to have places cleaned up both by the council and local landowners. Very often a landowner is left responsible for the clean up as well if people discard stuff on their land and this is very unfair on them,’ Cllr Blake said.

Cllr Blake paid tribute to the work of the Pure Project in combating illegal dumping.

‘ There is great work done across Wicklow to try and reduce these incidents and I know the Pure Mile is very successful. We live in the Garden of Ireland and illegal dumping is a blight on the landscape.

‘ There are plenty of recycling facilities in the county and also good waste collection services available to people. I would appeal to the public not to engage in illegal dumping and to contact Wicklow County Council if they are in difficulty with regards to waste disposal,’ Cllr Blake said.
