ELDERLY WARRIORS YOUNG GUNS 7 0

YOUNG and old enjoyed a great run out on St Stephen’s morning in the community field in Coolboy when the natives rose wearily from their beds to do battle in the sacred sporting ground.

The clash seen the more ‘experienced’ players taking on the ‘younger’ warriors and the battle had been billed as something akin to good versus evil in the lead up on social media.

It was the elderly stalwarts who drew first blood following fine footwork by Joseph Dempsey that allowed him dance through the static defenders and slot home smartly past a stranded Caoimhin Rawson.

In fairness, the young lads offered very little threat going forward and even then, they were superbly dealt with by the master Gerry Rawson, who gave his protege Caoimhin a lesson in goalkeeping.

Deadly Dempsey was on fire and landed his second soon after, when he was on the receiving end of a cracking through ball from playmaker P.J. Mulhall.

The old lads’ defense was commandeered by Adrian ‘Squibby’ and the towering Billy Gilfoyle.

The young lads battled hard but didn’t have the class or cunning to break down the opposition.

In fact, they started leaving gaps which the old lads exploited with gusto.

The game was in the balance at half-time, with the old boys 3-0 up but tiring, and it was super sub Dean Carthy who helped secure the game when he got on the end of a long punt from the keeper and finished into the net despite the best efforts of Rawson.

The shackles were off, and the young lads threw everything at the old lads but to no avail and got caught on the break three times which saw Dean Carthy chalk up another three goals to bring his personal tally up to four.

A result of 7-0 to the old lads on the day. Try as they might, the kids couldn’t breach the resolute defensive shield of the old boys.

The tackles were flying in, perhaps the best of these was Joseph Dempsey’s ‘fair and legal’ shoulder on Cillian O’Keeffe; savage stuff!

In the end, the old lads ran out deserved winners over the young guns.
