BLESSINGTON FC’s drive for five in the annual Ray Daniels memorial Cup final ended in tears last weekend when their GAA cousins spoiled the party with a stunning victory to wrench away the crown until next year.

A towering performance from Eddie Boylan and a single goal from Eoin Keogh helped the GAA squad to their sweet victory as the soccer squad struggled to cope with a new-found sense of energy and enthusiasm from their GAA enemies.

There was much ‘friendly banter’ exchanged on the day at the Blessington FC grounds where a decent crowd had torn themselves away from their Christmas T.V. schedule and selection box stash to support what is a wonderful annual event.

It’s worth noting that the victorious GAA side swept to victory despite missing the services of Anthony McLoughlin and Patrick O’Connor who were on duty with the Wicklow Senior footballers in Bray against Louth.

Having secured the previous four crowns in the competition, the Blessington FC side were confident of securing immortality with a fifth successive win but, like many other tremendous sporting outfits over the years, their dreams were dashed by a spirited and united GAA side who ripped up the script and waltzed to a deserved victory.

After the game it was back to the town for both teams with the GAA side receiving a hero’s welcome from their adoring public.

Blessingon FC are reported to be already planning an anbush this time next year as they seek to bounce back from this unexpected and disappointing defeat.
