Charity soccer matches

-

The annual Glencormac United Christmas charity matches took place last Thursday, December 27.

First up was the Joe Molloy Memorial Shield between the Coaches and Karl Bradshaws under-14 Squad. This was a super game of football which the coaches edged 2-1. Mary Molloy and her family, presented the shield to the winning coaches captain Liam Finnerty after the match but the talking point will be Andrew Molloys cracking strike on the day. It was about 20 yards out but by the time the evening had finished in Plucks, it was hit from the top of the Sugarloaf.

Then it was the Benny Finnerty Cup where the present team faced the Ex Glencormac Squad. Bray Wanderers legend Kieran ‘Tarzan’ O’Brien managed the ex-glens squad along with club stalwart Trevor Carr. This was the most competitive game in years and finished up 3-3 after 90 minutes, James Delahunty scoring twice for the present team along with Nay Watters with Gavan Barton, a super strike by Ciaran Ryan and Paul Molloy equalised for the ex-glens late on and so it went to penalties. Damian Johnston had the opportunity to win it for the older glens at 4-3 but missed and then in sudden death, nerves got to Alan Prendergast, who was like a rabbit caught in a headlight and fluffed his penalty kick while Nay Watters slotted home spot kick number six and the present team took the honours.

Thank you to the Molloy and Finnerty family for their support each year and well done to everyone who supported the two matches. All money raised are split between the Irish Heart Foundation and Bray Cancer Support Group (Purple House)
