SHEEP REPORT - SATURDAY JANUARY 5: Strong demand for all types especially for the 40 - 45kg lamb.

Lighter stores were up by €1–€3/ head. Heavy lambs made up to €118. 4 x 65kg lambs made €118; 3 x 52Kg lambs made €115; 6 x 51kg lambs made €114; 5 x 51kg lambs made €113; 7 x 46.6kg lambs made €105; 6 x 39kg lambs made €90; 10 x 41kg lambs made €90; 23 x 37kg lambs made €88; 30 x 30kg lambs made €69.

Ewes: Hogget made from €70–€118; stores made from €25 to €60.

SHEEP SALE – JANUARY 3: First sale of 2019 saw a strong entry of 2087 sheep and an excellent selling trade with heavy lambs selling up to €121.50.

Lambs 50kg+ €115– €121.50. 45kg to 49kg: €107–€118. 40kg to 44kg: €94–€111. stores over 35kg: €82–€101. stores under 35kg: €68–€93 cull ewes: €55–€122. In lamb ewes: €80–€110.

Prices: 18 lambs – 58kg, at €121.50, 12 lambs – 50kg, at €120, 16 lambs – 54kg, at €121, 25 lambs at €51kg, at €119, 22 lambs–50kg, at €115, 19 lambs – 40kg, at €97, 11 lambs – 46.4 at €109.50, 17 lambs – 32kg, at €81, 20 lambs at 33kg, at €85.50, 16 lambs at 45kg, at €109.

CATTLE SALE – JANUARY 5: Opening Sale of 2019 saw 300 head on offer and improved trade for most classes with dry cows and light store cattle seeing the biggest increase in price.

Beef and forward bullocks – 550 – 850 over; Continenta­l store bullocks – 420 – 780 over; Beef Hfrs – 530 – 820 over; store Hfrs – 260 – 710 over; Weanling bulls – 350 – 550 over; Beef cows – 320 - 600 over; store cows – 60 under – 350 over.

Calves: Friesian bulls €70–€235; Cont bulls €250–€375; HD/AA bulls €150–€345; HD/AA Hfrs €155–€255;

Prices - Dry cows: 1 Limousin 790kg at €1,390, 1 Limousin 656kg at €1,070, 1 Limousin 612kg at €1,030, 1 Limousin 728kg at €1,260, 1 SM 656kg at €970, 2 Friesian 648kg at €690, 1 Friesian 562kg at €560,

Tullow

With the first sheep sale of 2019 held in Tullow on Wednesday, January 2 we had over 600 sheep on offer with the trade opening as a lively trade with a strong demand noticed for the well fleshed hoggets.

Hoggets over 50kg sold today from €112 up to a tops of €121 with one exceptiona­l lot 53kg making €121 while we saw the forward type store hogget over 45kg selling from €100 up to a tops of 48kg making €114 with the majority between €106 and €110.

The lighter store hoggets selling from a base of €78 and €80 for those lighter type stores with the majority of those 36kg to 39kg selling from the mid €80’s up to €95 with some pushing over 40kg breaking the €100.

Cast ewes a lively trade for the feeding type ewes with the stronger feeding ewes €15 to €22 with the kg with the lighter store ewes selling from €10 to €15 with the kg while we saw some in lamb breeding sheep today genuine hoggets and 2yr olds carrying approx. 1.8 lambs selling up to a tops of €150 per head.

Next Tuesday in conjunctio­n with our weekly sheep sale we have a special entry of 40 SFX ewes scanned in lamb due mid-February carrying 1.9 lambs to a Texel at 12 noon.
