Nature Reserve marks World Wetlands Day

-

THE East Coast Nature Reserve in Newcastle held a special birdwatching event to celebrate World Wetlands Day.

The family-orientated outing involved guests taking a short walk then taking out their binoculars to see how many different bird species they could spot. Attendees also had the chance to make a selection of St Brigid’s Crosses woven from rushes.

This month also marks the 25th anniversary of the Irish Wetland Bird Survey (IWEBS), with the Wicklow Branch of BirdWatch Ireland organising a talk by IWEBS coordinator Niamh Fitzgerald, who discussed the history of the survey and the different successes it has achieved down through the years. Over 100 Special Protection Areas ave been designated to date as a result of IWEBS data.
