Avondale students through to exhibition

- By MYLES BUCHANAN

THREE Avondale Community College students have been selected as one of the groups shortlisted for the Certified Irish Angus Beef Exhibition taking place in Croke Park in March.

Transition Year students Lauren O’Reilly, Hannah Caw and Ciara Clancy underwent a gruelling interview process, starting with the submission of a three minute interview along with up to 400 other entries.

They were then one of the 60 projects selected to engage in a 20 minute interview with judges at the Mullingar Park Hotel.

Agricultural Science Teacher, Louise Bell, says the girls deserve all the credit for making it through to the exhibition in Croke Park.

‘ They have put a huge amount of effort into their project. They will have a stand at the exhibition where they will present their project from.

‘ There are ten to fifteen judges who will all be scrutinising them. They really got behind their project and worked with local primary schools. All their hard work has really paid off,’ said Ms Bell.

Five finalist teams will eventually be selected from an exhibition of semi-finalists in Croke Park in March 2019 and awarded five Irish Angus cross calves each at the National Ploughing Championships 2019. The teams will rear their calves through to finishing and fully benefit from the net profit at sale of the calves to ABP or Kepak.

All finalists will receive skills development, inductions and insights into the meat production supply chain from farm to retail presentation over the course of a progressive two year programme.
