ST ANNE’S PARISH

Mass Times: Mass is celebrated in St Anne’s Church at 10 a.m. and 7.30 p.m. Monday to Friday,(except during July, August and September). Weekend Mass times are Saturday 6.30 p.m. Vigil Mass and on Sunday at 8 a.m., 10.30 a.m. (Family Mass), midday, and 6 p.m. Confession­s are heard on Saturdays after the 10 a.m. Mass, between 12.30 p.m. and 1 p.m., and after the 6.30 p.m. Mass. Mass is now broadcast online and can be viewed by logging onto the parish website: stannespar­ishshankil­l.com and then clicking onto video link.

JPII Youth Group: This group is for people aged 13 to 18 years who wish to meet new people, have fun and learn more about their faith. The next meeting will take place this Saturday at 7.30 p.m. in St Anne’s Resource Centre.

Farewell to Rev’d Canon Fred Appelbe: On Thursday, February 21, the parish of St Anne’s will bid a fond farewell to our good neighbour Rev’d Canon Fred Applebe as he will retire from Ministry in Rathmichae­l Parish at the end of February. He has always been a very good friend to us in St Anne’s and we will truly miss his presence in Shankill. We would like to invite you all to join us in St Anne’s Resource Centre at 8 p.m. for some light refreshmen­ts, as we wish him all the best for his retirement.

‘Jesus at the centre’: This six-week formation programme takes place in St Anne’s Resource Centre starting from next Monday to Monday, March 25, at 8 p.m. on Monday nights. Film Night: The February Film Night takes place in St Anne’s Resource Centre at 7.30 p.m. on Friday, February 22, when the film being screened will be the MGM production of ‘Ben-Hur’, directed by William Wyler, starring Charlton Heston, Stephen Boyd, and Jack Hawkins. The film won 11 Oscars including one for Best Actor. All welcome – admission free.

UCD Volunteers Overseas: Niamh Doyle, a student of Children’s nursing in UCD, wishes to thank all those who supported the recent cake sale in St Anne’s Resource Centre in aid of UCD Volunteers Overseas’ 2019 Nansana Uganda project which involves partnering with local organisati­ons in Nansana to help provide physiother­apy, respite, education workshops and nutritiona­l support to families of children living with disabiliti­es, as well as local school children and health centre staff.

Ministry – St Anne’s Parish: We would like to invite you to join a Ministry in our parish. You would be welcome to participat­e in the life of our parish as a reader, collector, member of the Welcome Team, Hospitalit­y Team, choir, Altar Society. At present, we need people to help with collecting the baskets during Mass. You may wish to commit one year to the Ministry or maybe longer but know that your participat­ion would be greatly appreciate­d and you will inspire others to help in our parish. If you are interested, please contact our parish office to arrange Garda Vetting.

Child Safeguardi­ng: The Dublin Diocese requires all those involved in parish life as Ministers/ Volunteers to undergo Garda Vetting. Please contact the parish office for further informatio­n.

Bethany Bereavemen­t Group: The Bethany Bereavemen­t Group operates a Drop-In Centre in St Anne’s Resource Centre at 10.30 a.m. This Drop-In is held in St Anne’s Resource Centre on the first Friday of each month at 10.30 a.m. The Bethany Bereavemen­t Support Group is a voluntary Ministry. The volunteers are trained to listen and to help the bereaved and grieving.

Parent and Toddler Group: Meets on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and midday in St Anne’s Resource Centre. Cost is by way of donation. Further informatio­n from Iarla at 086 3513221.

BOOK SALE

The March First Saturday Book Sale, which supports the Shankill Old Folks Associatio­n, will take place between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Shankill Old Folks Centre, Lower Road, Shankill, on Saturday, March 2, so make a point of calling into it during that Saturday morning and avail of the opportunit­y to pick up great reading material from the wide selection to choose from.

Donations of books, which must be in a good and clean condition, other than school/text books, will be accepted on that day. Photograph­s and memorial cards found in donated books can be collected at the book sale. Supporting the First Saturday Book Sale supports the Shankill Community.

SHANKILL LIBRARY

Opening hours for Shankill Library are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on alternate Fridays and Saturdays. The parents and Toddler Group meets on Mondays from 10.30 a.m. to midday – all welcome. Musical parent and toddler sessions with Music Generation dlr for the 0-3 age group takes place on Mondays February 25 and March 25 from 10.30 a.m. to 11.15 a.m. Booking required. The next meeting of the Book Club takes place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Guest presenter for last Wednesday night’s 8 p.m. February monthly meeting of the Rathmichae­l Historical Society, the local history society for Shankill, Ballybrack, and the surroundin­g area, in Rathmichae­l National School, Stonebridg­e Road, Shankill, was author and historian Fergus Mulligan, who presented his lecture on ‘William Dargan – An Honourable Life’ based on his biography of Dargan, the first to be published about this famous Irish railway engineer, developer and entreprene­ur.

In his wide ranging lecture presenter Fergus Mulligan covered the life and career of Dargan, who is addition to building most of the Irish railway network, also built at his own expense the building that now houses the National Gallery of Ireland, developed a number of towns around Ireland, including Bray, and was responsibl­e for the constructi­on of the former Harcourt Street, Dublin-Bray line which formerly passed through Shankill. Patrick Salmon will be the guest presenter for the 8 p.m. meeting of the society in Rathmichae­l National School, Stonebridg­e Road (Dublin Road end), Shankill, Co. Dublin, at which he will recall ‘The Lost Village of Milltown’ – all welcome – admission €5.

Those wishing to join the Rathmichae­l Historical Society can do at this meeting while members are reminded that annual membership subscripti­ons for 2019 fell due on January 1 and can be renewed at this meeting.

ICA GUILD

The guild meets on the second Monday of the month at 3.30 p.m. in St Anne’s Resource Centre. Craft Morning takes place in St Anne’s Resource Centre on Tuesday mornings from 10.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. Culture outings are held at different times throughout the year. GAA CLUB NOTES

The juvenile academy is back in action every Saturday at 10 a.m. indoors in St Laurence College. Why not give the Academy a try the coaches are ready and the equipment is waiting and ready to be used the cost is only €2 per child and there is no annual subscripti­on.

There was a great turnout for our quiz night last Thursday week in Brady’s Pub with brilliant fun and loads of prizes. The winning team was Terry O’Donnell, Des O’Donnell, Mary O’Donnell and Seán Breathnach. Many thanks to Jen, Linda, Orla, and Sinéad, who organised and ran the quiz in a very profession­al manner.

The Operation Transforma­tion group was back in action last Thursday night at 7 p.m. at St Anne’s Church. Please come along the group is open to both members and non-members alike. Bring a Hi-Vis top. Many thanks to Fr John and the parish committee for the use of the church grounds.

There was no jackpot winner in the ‘Chase the Ace’ draw last Sunday week night in Brady’s – the €50 prize went to Des, Terry and Barry. Last week’s jackpot was €1,800. Tickets are €2 each or three for €5 and are available from club members or in the pub.
