Children collect 215 boxes for appeal

- By MARY FOGARTY

BOYS and girls at St Fergal’s National School collected 215 shoe boxes for Team Hope Christmas Shoe Box Appeal.

EACH year, Team Hope sends thousands of gift-filled shoe boxes to children in Africa and Eastern Europe.

Children in each of the school’s 19 classes made a huge effort to collect presents for children who are affected by poverty.

The young people who will receive them may come from families with very little income, or live on the margins of society or in areas affected by conflict.

The boxes contain gifts for children ranging in age from two to 14.

Items included art materials, toiletries, toys, clothes and more.

Destinations for the boxes include Malawi, Romania, Albania, Ukraine, Belarus, Burundi, and others.

Teacher Maria Hickson coordinated the project, which coincides with the school’s Amber Flag application.

The Pieta House Amber Flag initiative recognises the individual efforts of primary and secondary schools, companies, and groups to create healthy, inclusive environments.
