Girls’ public speaking competition
FOUR schools took part in the Soroptimists’ girls’ public speaking competition last month in the Esplanade Hotel in Bray.
Thirteen girls from St Gerard’s, Rathdown, Glendalough and Coláiste Ráithín took part in the competition.
The competition was founded in Bray in 1981 with the aims being to encourage girls to play a more prominent part in public life; or girls to improve the art of communication and develop self confidence; and, finally, for them to develop skills to speak effectively and articulate with clarity.
Each participant chose from topics covering human rights, health, environment, democracy, empowerment of women, education, friendship and volunteering.
Emilia Connolly from St Gerard’s School was announced the winner, with Ruby Aron, Colaiste Rhaitin runner-up. Both girls will progress to the Regional Final which will be held in Dungarvan in February. Isabelle Ryan was named as reserve participant.
‘ The aim of the competition is to encourage girls to play a more prominent part in public life; to improve the art of communication; to encourage girls to develop the skill to speak effectively and to articulate with clarity and conviction; and to develop self-confidence and personality,’ said president of Bray and District Soroptimists Clare Comerford. ‘I would like to sincerely thank all the participants and their teachers for participating in this event. The quality and depth of their speeches has educated all us who have had the privilege to be in attendance.’
