Huge crowd turns out to bid the fondest of farewells to Dave Fox

- By MARY FOGARTY

DELGANY Golf Club gathered the troops last Saturday night, to wish sporting hero Dave Fox well as he relocates to Birmingham.

Dave is a farmer of long-standing from Windgates. He was a greyhound owner, a racehorse owner, played Gaelic football for County Wicklow and Kilcoole, hurling for Greystones, football for Kilcoole, soccer for Bray Wanderers, and both soccer and rugby for Greystones. He played at a high level and was on the first teams for all of those clubs.

He spent more than 25 years training the juniors in Delgany Golf Club.

Dave is moving to his wife Muriel’s native Birmingham. Her children were among the many people to attend the special event in Dave’s honour as he takes his leave.

Dave’s friend and outgoing club president Derek Mulroney hosted the event, and welcomed RTE’s Sean O’Rourke to play the part of ‘Eamonn Andrews’ for the ‘ This is Your Life’ portion of the evening.

Derek is one of three surviving members of the first Greystones hurling team to win the county championship - the others being Dave Fox and Andy Byrne.

Sean O’Rourke helped to deliver this and many more nuggets of information to a sold-out event at Delgany Golf Clubs.

Sean is a member in Delgany and did a most wonderful job of presenting Dave’s fascinating life.

One of Dave’s projects was to fund-raise for a charity project in Zambia. He raised €5,000 in Delgany to put a solar powered system into a remote hospital in Zambia to store vaccine drugs.

His friends believed that Dave’s remarkable contributions to sport and the community should be recognised before he embarks on next phase of his life. The presentation included videos and voiceover, with RTE’s former director of production

Eugene Murray ensuring a most high standard of quality in that respect.

The evening included a delicious dinner, and a performance by Waterbound, whom Derek Mulroney said are ‘ the best band I’ve heard in a long time’.

There was a huge amount of good will towards Dave, and a celebratory atmosphere at the special event.

Dave himself enjoyed the night very much, and was joined by many members of the Fox family from near and far.
