Byrne bags a late winner for Magpies

Wicklow Cup first round

Newtown United booked their place in the second round of the Wicklow Cup after edging out Carnew AFC ‘A’ 2-1 at the Back Alley on Sunday.

Seán Heffernan fired the Magpies in front, but a JJ McCrea penalty drew the hosts level. However, Aaron Byrne restored Newtown’s advantage in the final minute to send them through to the next round.

Derry Rovers eventually saw off Pat O’Toole Division leaders Roundwood AFC after a thrilling tie in Clonegal, winning 9-8 on penalties after the sides were deadlocked 5-5 after extra-time.

Roundwood raced into a three-goal advantage but Rovers rallied and the game was 4-4 after normal time. The hosts then got their noses in front but Roundwood levelled to force penalties.

Paul Nolan (two), Dan Murphy, Ian St Ledger and Podge Ryan got the goals for the home side, with Damien Johnson and Allen Harris both netting doubles for the visitors and Kevin Lynch also getting in on the act.

A Darren Collopy double earned St Anthony’s ‘A’ a 2-1 win over Coolboy Rangers at Finn Park, with Brendan Behan replying.

Arklow Town ‘B’ progressed after overcoming Shamrock Celtic 4-2 with goals from Conor Dodd (two), John Kearns and Jack Kavanagh. Kevin Coady and Eric Dunne got on the scoresheet for Celtic.

Arklow Celtic ‘A’ overcame their ‘B’ side 5-1 thanks to second-half doubles from Lee Doyle and Conor Smith.

Gary McLoughlin had given the second string a first-half lead, but Jason Wolohan levelled soon afterwards and they took control after the change of ends.

Greystone United progressed without having to kick a ball as they were handed a walkover from Arklow Town ‘A’.

Meanwhile, holders Glencormac United fell at the first hurdle when they were beaten 2-1 by Wicklow Rovers (see focus match).

Pat O’Toole Division 1

Conary United moved up to third place in the Pat O’Toole Division 1 with an emphatic 8-2 win over Aughrim Rangers at Allen Park.

David Doran, Stephen Roche, Andy Doyle and Jordan Kinsella all netted doubles for the winners, with the hosts replying through Mick Brennan and a Ronan Lynch penalty.

John Tobin Youth League

Wicklow Town lead the way in the John Tobin Youth League after overpoweri­ng Coolboy Rangers 4-0 at Finlay Park on Saturday.

Dylan Kavanagh helped himself to a hat-trick, while Jack Meaney also chipped in with a goal.

Arklow United and Aughrim Rangers shared the spoils after a 4-4 draw at Arklow Credit Union Park.

Paddy Roche netted a double for the hosts, with Saoirse Barnes and Jack Kavanagh adding a goal apiece, while Shane Browne, Dylan Lynch, Darragh Keenan and James Doyle scored for Rangers.

Meanwhile, the meeting of Wicklow Rovers U-17s and Wicklow Rovers Youths was abandoned late on with the Youths side leading 3-1.
