CARTHY SECURES PRO SOCCER CONTRACT
Dunlavin ace Conor thriving at Molineux
MOTIVATION is not an issue for Dunlavin soccer star Conor Carty during the lockdown after it was revealed last weekend that the former Wicklow GAA player has accepted a professional contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Carty was initially signed to the Wolves under-16s in 2017 but quickly rose through the ranks to join up with the under-18s and has now achieved the dream.
‘I think, in his first year, he showed moments of quality, but was a bit inconsistent, and was challenged to be more consistent’, Scott Sellars, head of Wolves academy, said as part of the announcement.
‘For any young player, having one good game in six shows you have potential, but if you want to be professional, you have to perform in a professional manner, which is being consistent.
‘Conor’s really risen to that challenge over the past six months and that’s why he’s got his contract.’
After scoring five goals in 14 appearances, including the team’s final goal before sport went into lockdown, he was viewed as worthy enough to be offered a professional contract three months earlier than originally planned.
Now, as the future of football in 2020 is up in the air amid the coronavirus pandemic, Carty finds himself more motivated than ever to return to the United Kingdom to continue his ascent up the Molineux ladder.
‘I really want to go back but, at the same time, you have to do what you are being told to do,’ said Conor this week..
‘ We are all getting on well, here and I am keeping myself motivated. It keeps you motivated that little bit more to keep doing it.’
