Fergal’s climb to second

-

The Bray side climbed to second place in the Shield after a comfortable victory over the promoted Ashford Rovers side.

Cormac Doyle netted a brace, one goal a header and the other a rebound from his own penalty before Paul O’Brien secured the three points late on with a double of his own. Fergal’s will also be competing in the Charlie Bishop cup after they finished level on points with Aughrim Rangers.

Both sides have been granted a place in the competition.

The Bray sides title hopes were dealt a huge blow during the week after returning from Newtown with no points from this tight encounter.

A John Heffernan penalty proved to be enough to sink the Saints who now trail Glenview FC by six points while this win brings Newtown to within nine points of the leaders.

The Saints have an all Bray Charlie Bishop Cup semi-final to look forward to on Wednesday with Wolfe Tone Celtic before hosting Glenview on Sunday in what could be a make or break week for the side’s season.

Newtown will also face Glenview this week when they travel to Bray this Thursday night.

In the warm up to their Charlie Bishop Cup semi-final against the same opposition it was the Enniskerry side that emerged on top.

Ashley McDonagh scored the opener before Niall Vaughan added to his side’s tally late on to secure the three points which now mean Enniskerry cannot be relegated.

Wicklow Rovers may have a cup final date top look forward to but they need to secure some points in the league to ensure they avoid relegation.

Glenview continued their march towards the Premier Division title after this impressive five-goal hammering of the Arklow side.

Kieran Conway, Darren Collopy and Bray Wanderers legend Kieran ‘Tarzan’ O’Brien all netted for the home side as well as a Stephen Murphy double.

Glenview will this week face the two other teams in the top three in a hugely important week while Arklow Celtic face a trip to St. Peter’s next Tuesday.

After slipping up against Newtown United a few days previously, ‘Peter’s got their title chase back on track with this convincing 5-0 win over Arklow Utd.

Omar Taha returned home with a two-goal haul and Jeffrey Kelly, Tony Harris and Jason Matthews all added singles for the Bray outfit who proved too hot to handle.
