Fixture news beings relief

Wicklow trio set for action

THE Ireland women’s national team’s remaining Euro 2021 qualifiers have been scheduled to take place before the end of this year, much to the delight and relief of defender Louise Quinn.

On Saturday, the Football Association of Ireland revealed that Quinn and co. would play their remaining games later this year, starting with a trip to play group favourites Germany on September 19, then a clash away in Ukraine on October 23, and finally the visit of the Germans to Dublin on December 1.

Ireland will be going into their final three games top of Group I one point ahead of Germany, who have played a game less. Vera Pauw’s team are all but certain of finishing in the top two of the group, as Ukraine sit third; eight points behind Germany.

Reacting to the news on social media, in the wake of topsy turvy week for her, professionally, Louise Quinn posted a simple message: ‘However….things I loved seeing today.’

It made for an otherwise disappointing week for Quinn when, two days before the news regarding Ireland’s Euro qualifiers, the Football Association announced the cancellation of the remainder of the English Women’s Super League.

As it stood, reigning champions Arsenal – for whom Louise had been an integral part at centre-back in their title-winning campaign last year – were third; six points behind Manchester City in first, with a game in-hand.

While she regretted the way in which the season had been brought to a close, Quinn said that she understood that the health of the players, coaches, and general public was of paramount importance.

‘We all wanted more of these moments this season but overall I think the best decision was made to end the Barclays FA WSL season early, in terms of safety to all involved. As always, the Arsenal supporters outdo themselves each year! Stay safe and well folks.’
