Doyle the hero as Abbey rejoice!

-

ABBEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE enjoyed its first soccer success this week in 1990 when their under-15 team captured the Wicklow-Wexford Schools League Cup by defeating Co. Wexford side Ramsgrange thanks to a late winner from captain Mark Doyle.

Another Co. Wicklow side, St. Killian’s from Bray, were unfortunate to lose out in the under-13 final when they went down to New Ross CBS after extra-time in their decider.

Abbey Community College started very brightly and took the lead through a Ger Scully goal after 10 minutes of the under-15 decider in Arklow.

They enjoyed first-half domination and opened up a two-goal lead when Edward Dunne found the Ramsgrange net but the Co. Wexford students rallied close to the end of the opening period and opened their account just before the break.

Ramsgrange equalised in the second half with Abbey looking under all sorts of the pressure but the goal proved to be the jolt the Co. Wicklow side needed and they rallied and a great individual run by captain Mark Doyle brought the winning goal to the delight of his fellow players and supporters.

Key men for the Abbey Community College team were the aforementioned Doyle, Robert Kavanagh, Stephen Geary, Warren Gormley and Deane Turner.

A late extra-time goal sank the St. Killian’s dreams of success in the under-13 final.

The Bray students had recovered well from an early New Ross CBS goal and looked like they had clinched victory when they took the lead one minute from the end.

However, directly from the tip off New Ross equalised to take the game to extra-time and with three minutes to go they scored to claim the title.
