Knight was the big winner at virtual awards

WITH awards ceremonies proving impossible in the current climate it falls to clubs to be creative in celebratin­g their seasons and Bray Runners proved more than capable in that regard when they held their virtual awards last week to sign off on a super season.

The big winner on the night was Michael Knight who picked up the athlete of the year award after winning three gold medals including the M65 Leinster gold and national bronze at the Dublin City Marathon.

‘We had our ‘virtual’ awards night yesterday evening - congratula­tions to all the winners: Joe Kelly, Darren Cullen, Jean O’Kennedy, Dominic Horan, Sharon Ryan, Peter Doran, Orla Phillips and athlete of the year Michael Knight,’ said Bray Runners on their Facebook page.’ Well done also to our league winners Sharon Ryan, Lee Borland and Paul Allen. On the night there was also recognitio­n for services to the club for Richard Kavanagh and Cyril Smyth. Hope to see you all in person again soon.’ they wrote.

Joe Kelly picked up the Barry Keane Award for coaching and he and his coaching colleagues were credited for playing a major role in the juvenile successes enjoyed by the club in recent years.

The endurance award went to Darren Cullen who ran the London Marathon in a personal best of 2:42.59 and followed that with another personal best in Dublin of 2:40.23.

Joint masters athlete of the year was Jean Kenny who enjoyed a tremendous year with her W55 Leinster gold medal being just one of her many highlights.

She shared the award with Dominic Horan who won silver in the Leinster indoor championsh­ips and fourth in the Leinster masters cross country championsh­ips.

Sharon Ryan collected the most improved athlete award and Peter Doran the pesonality of
