NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Plenty of football played last weekend as a couple more of our teams resumed action. Our under-10s (kindly sponsored by Shape Construction) hosted Roundwood and despite our team running out easy winners on the final scoreline the away side played their part in an exciting game. Newtown’s goals came from Elliott Garrett two, David McCormack two, Conor Shevlin, Gerry Hoban, Rory O’Gorman, and a super debut goal from Alex McKenna. Best for Newtown on the day were Alex Mackey, Aaron Nolan, and Ryan Mahon.

Our 11’s won 6-1 away to Arklow Town Black. In a game where they were in total control their goals came from Leon O’Connor and Kayden McMahon with two goals each, JV Kelly, and Nathan McMahon. On the day Lennon McGuinness and Ryan McDonald were the star players.

Our under-12s had to settle for a share of the spoils at home to St Patrick’s in a 1-all draw. Newtown certainly had the better chances but only took the lead with minutes to go when the hard-working Pat Carey set up Aidan Heffernan to hammer the ball to the roof of the net

from just inside the area. However, concentration levels were poor as straight from the restart the away side equalised to nab a point, they feel they would deserve. Best on the day for Newtown were Pat Carey and Ryan McDonald.

For the 13’s it was a long trip to Shillelagh without reward as they went down 6-1 to an exceptionally good home side. PJ Duffy scored the Newtown goal and hit the post soon after but that was as good as it got.

Our under-14s (kindly sponsored by Adrian Dunne Pharmacy) lost at home to Avonmore B on a 3-1 scoreline in a game where yet again the team gave it their all. Aaron Cawley scored the Newtown goal.

The under-8s and 9’s are back in action this coming weekend meaning all our teams will have resumed on field action. The fixtures (WDSL) for the weekend of Saturday/Sunday, September 12/13 are as follows: under-8s at home to Rathnew FC ko Sunday at 11.30 a.m.; under-9s at home to Wicklow Rovers White ko Sunday at 10.15 a.m.; under-10s vs Roundwood, Glencormac Utd and Coolboy Rangers in a WDSL Academy Blitz (Venue: Arklow Town – Sunday 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.); under-11s at home to Roundwood FC ko Saturday at 12.30 p.m.; under-12s at home to Wicklow Rovers B ko Saturday at 11 a.m. (FR); under-13s away to Aughrim Rangers ko Sunday at 10 a.m.; under-14s at home to Coolboy Rangers ko Saturday at 11.30 a.m. (fixtures and ko times are subject to change)

Congratulations to our senior side Newtown United on winning the Jim McLoughlin Cup last Sun

day after a 3-0 victory over Glencormac United in Arklow. Goals from Aaron Byrne, Dean Odlum and Evan Moran secured the cup. Bobby Greenan was nominated Man of the match, Good luck to the players and management as they attempt to reach the Wicklow Cup Final when they tussle with St Peter’s in the semi-final.

We have five players from the club celebrating their birthdays around this time and they are Sam French-Mullen and Samuel Kearns from the under-8s, Morgan McMahon from the under-11s and under-12s duo Mikey Synnott and Aidan Heffernan. Happy birthday lads from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC.

Recently the Government announced new Covid-19 restrictions which included the directive that no spectators were allowed to attend any training or matches. Up till Friday all sports bodies including the FAI were in talks with Nephet (another name...) to clarify certain restrictions that were announced. After what seemed like forever, late on Friday evening the FAI issued the updated protocols for FAI Safer Return to Training/Games. We have since communicated this to all coaches and parents within the club.

Most of the document is the same except for: 1. Only one parent can accompany their child to training or a match. Only exception is if a parent is a COVID Supervisor or a coach of their child’s team. 2. No siblings of any player are allowed to be spectators under any circumstances. 3. Two groups/Teams/Pods can train at the same time providing there Is sufficient distance between both. 4. No person/s other than those stated above should be in and around the training area and that includes dog walkers and parents playing with young children. 5. The 2M social distancing protocol still applies especially for all parents (spectators) and players (subs) who are on the sideline at matches. If anyone has any further enquiries regards the updated protocols, they can contact our COVID Compliance Officers Rory Hackett & Hughie Nolan.

The aim of Newtown Juniors FC on our return to training/games is to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone, once we adhere to the guidelines laid down. We will be continuing to update all protocols as we get them from the FAI, and we will also be holding regular de-briefing meetings with all coaches and supervisors. Anyone, who requires further information can contact any committee member of the club.

We are always on the lookout for volunteers to fill several Roles within the club. Recently we have been busy renewing and reviewing our Club Safety Statement and our Club Risk Assessments. We have also had several volunteers, who did their Safeguarding Refresher one and we await courses both at Safeguarding and at Child Welfare when certain restrictions are lifted. We would like to recruit a couple of MPs (Mandated Person) and DLPs (Designated Liaison Person) to assist those already in these roles. Those already in the roles are also coaches within the club and are on the executive committee but we would like volunteers to solely concentrate on these roles. Full training will be provided. The roles are not very time consuming and may interest someone who would like to volunteer in the club in some capacity.

For further information on all matters Newtown Juniors FC please contact the secretary at 087 6987653 or by email to hughienolan@gmail.com and you can also follow the club on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
