THIS week, I am running a build back better programme to support people working remotely in partnership and generously supported by Wexford Chamber Skillnet. It is FREE to participants and we have had a great response to it, through the newspaper and from companies around the county and beyond.

We have all been through challenges before. While what has happened regarding COVID is unprecedented – in terms of the scale of disruption, challenge and change around the world–individually many of us have been though our own crises and already have shown ourselves that we can build back better.

1. As a starting point, it is good to look at yourself, your life, and think back to other tough times and how you got on a better track. Straight roads don’t make good drivers. Challenge makes us stronger and enables us to grow, be and do better. Remember how you felt when all this happened. How do you feel today. Check in with yourself and see how far you have come already.

2. To build back better it is important to be able to clear your head and focus on whatever it is you are doing. Meditation is a great way of training your mind to focus. The average person is focused only 52 percent of the time. Imagine how much more you could achieve if you are focused more of the time.

3. The next step is to work on your confidence. Confidence comes in different ways. Fundamentally it comes from your values and sense of alignment within yourself. When what you think, feel, say and do are all pointing in the same direction, confidence naturally arises. If you are thinking one thing, saying something different and doing another, that erodes your sense of yourself and what you stand for.

Confidence blossoms when our mind and heart are working together. Feeling confident also comes through a series of victories… when you achieve what you set out to do, however small or big. Procrastination is the enemy of confidence. By definition it means that you cannot rely on yourself and no longer believe you can achieve what you set out to do.

It is also critical to keep fear and uncertainty in check. Fear is a part of life and we are hardwired to experience it, but the solution is to face whatever you are afraid of, not to feed it. It is good to question but it is not helpful to feed doubt. When doubt comes to visit, look at it, address what is necessary to look at and move ahead. Very often your first instinct is the correct one.

4. The next ingredient is determination. Confidence + Determination = Success. This involves being firm in your purpose. It is the ability to continue trying to do something, even when it is difficult to do so.

5. Confidence + Determination + Focus = Sustained Success.

There will always be difficulties in life. When we start to climb new mountains on the path we lead, it feels hard. But as we move up the mountain and look around we see the bigger picture. We see the beauty of life. You can then grow in confidence.
