Man seriously injured in Rathdrum explosion
A MAN remains in a serious condition following an explosion at a house in Rathdrum on Friday.
The incident took place at a house on Lower Main Street on Friday night.
Fire crews from Rathdrum and Arklow attended the scene of the incident which resulted in extensive damage to the property.
One man was injured and taken to hospital by ambulance. At the time of going to press, it’s understood the man remains in a critical condition in hospital. Another person, who lived in a neighbouring property, also required medical attention after the incident.
Gardai closed off Lower Main Street for a time following the incident.
Sections of the damaged property were demolished on Friday night due to concerns members of the public could be injured by falling masonry. It’s understood further safety works have since taken place.
While investigations are continuing, reports suggest the incident may have been caused by a gas explosion.
Councillor Pat Kennedy, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, said: ‘ The thoughts of the whole community are with this man and his family’.
