Fundraising drive for new sensory garden

-

THE campaign to create a beautiful and inclusive little corner of Burnaby Park has stepped up a gear with the launch of a fundraising drive this week.

Greystones Tidy Towns, in collaboration with Greystones Municipal District and the Triple A Alliance, are hoping to raise €15,000 through an online fundraiser in order to turn their dreams of a sensory garden into a reality.

Marie McCooey, chairperson of Greystones Tidy Towns, is hoping people can support their efforts to transform a section of Burnaby park into a welcoming, inclusive haven for all.

‘ This project will transform an eyesore in Burnaby Park into a place of beauty and peace for the entire community and for people with additional sensory needs,’ she said. ‘We need a further €15,000 to make this sensory garden a reality.’

To date, the three groups behind the sensory garden have successfully applied for a number of grants, raising €30,000 for the project. However, there is still a shortfall of €15,000 and they are hoping the public can come to the rescue.

The garden, by local garden designer

Philip Brightling, will contain plants and other elements that allow those with additional needs to enjoy the great outdoors.

‘ This garden design will appeal to all the senses, with flowers, shrubs, herbs and other landscape features,’ said Mr Brightling. ‘It’s designed with the purpose of stimulating the senses. This stimulation occurs courtesy of plants and the use of materials that engage one’s senses of sight, smell, touch, taste and sound.’
