Week of Sport to get un­der way in county

Peo­ple in Wicklow are be­ing en­cour­aged to get ac­tive for Euro­pean Week of Sport 2020.

The event, which runs from Septem­ber 23 to 30, will see a mix­ture of on­line and off­line events avail­able to cater to the needs of ev­ery mem­ber of the com­mu­nity mak­ing it easy to #BeAc­tive even from the com­fort of your own front room.

Sport Ire­land, the Na­tional Co-or­di­nat­ing Body for Euro­pean Week of Sport, hope that this year’s event will in­spire even more peo­ple than ever to get in­volved and has funded mul­ti­ple flag­ship as well as lo­cal events run by the Net­work of Lo­cal Sports Part­ner­ships. The Wicklow Sports and Recre­ation Part­ner­ship have or­gan­ised events in the Garden County.

Euro­pean Week of Sport aims to in­crease the level of par­tic­i­pa­tion in sport and phys­i­cal ac­tiv­ity in the EU. The week is for ev­ery­one, re­gard­less of age, back­ground, or fit­ness level. By bring­ing aware­ness to the fact that an ac­tive life­style is for ev­ery­one, Euro­pean Week of Sport aims to act as a spring­board to be­ing more ac­tive.

Speak­ing about the event,

the Cathaoir­leach of Wicklow County Coun­cil, Coun­cil­lor Pat Kennedy, said: ‘ The Euro­pean Week of Sport is a fan­tas­tic week within the year where peo­ple across the county get to try out some­thing new. Wicklow Sports and Recre­ation Part­ner­ship have a wide range of ac­tiv­i­ties for ev­ery­one and I am en­cour­ag­ing ev­ery­one to get in­volved.’

ation Part­ner­ship is run­ning nu­mer­ous events dur­ing the Euro­pean Week of Sport, from on­line nutri­tion talk with Daniel Davey to Vir­tual 5K Walk/Run. The week will fin­ish up with an on­line sun­set yoga class.

Week of Sport am­bas­sador and 2fm ra­dio pre­sen­ter, Eoghan McDer­mott, said: ‘ This is a great op­por­tu­nity for peo­ple of all ages to try out a new sport for the first time or get

back in­volved in a sport that they have al­ways loved. It’s not about go­ing out and be­ing the best, we just want peo­ple to get out and be ac­tive which will no doubt see a pos­i­tive knock on ef­fect on both their phys­i­cal and men­tal health.’
