Sod is turned on new sensory garden at Burnaby Park
THE SOD was turned on Monday evening on a new sensory garden for Greystones, located at Burnaby Park.
Greystones Sensory Garden is a Greystones Tidy Towns initiative in collaboration with Greystones Municipal District and Wicklow Triple A Alliance. Together, and with the support of the community, they hope to transform an eyesore in the park into a place of beauty, peace and tranquillity.
Organisers have applied for a number of grants from Wicklow County Council and to date they have raised over €30,000 towards the building of the project.
The garden was designed by local garden designer Philip Brightling. This garden design will appeal to all the senses with flowers, shrubs, herbs and other landscape features. It’s designed with the purpose of stimulating the senses. This stimulation occurs courtesy of plants and the use of materials that engage one’s senses of sight, smell, touch, taste, and sound.
‘Greystones Tidy Towns has always been committed to making a difference to the lives of both humans and non-humans in the town with our various projects and we hope that this sensory garden will further enhance the environment of our rapidly expanding town by providing a peaceful and tranquil space for children on the various spectra such as autism, children with special needs and children with Downs Syndrome,’ said a spokesperson for Tidy Towns.
‘ The area will also be accessible to wheelchair users and anyone with mobility or intellectual difficulties. The facility will also be a useful form of therapy in the care of people with Dementia and be of benefit to members of our older community by allowing them a space to relax and meditate.’
The garden will be located in a neglected section of the park, hidden in the southeast corner, behind the memorial stone and copse of trees.
