Concern over mountain bikes on walk

-

EFFORTS will be made to try and prevent mountain bikers from using the cliff walk in Wicklow town.

Cllr Mary Kavanagh raised the issue at last week’s meeting of Wicklow Municipal District after coming across two mountain bikers while she was recently out on the cliff walk.

‘I met two young kids along what is a very narrow path. They were around 15 and I told them “this is a walk, not a mountain bike path.” They replied that there were no signs to say mountain bikes weren’t allowed. I had asked for such a sign when the walk was first re-opened. It’s just not an appropriate place for people to cycle. The path is to narrow and it is too close to the cliff edge. I dread to think if someone hit a rock and went over the edge.’

District Engineer Kevin Scanlon said he was uncertain of what measures could be taken to ban mountain bikers from the cliff walk but he would get back to Cllr Kavanagh once he had carried out some inquiries.
