Club fixtures wipeout

Inter-county and elite fixtures still surviving

-

CLUB sporting fixtures across Wicklow and Ireland have been wiped out following the move to Level 3 under the Plan for Living with Covid-19.

All club GAA and soccer fixtures have fallen by the wayside including the Intermediate hurling final, the Junior ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ hurling finals and the Junior ‘B’ and ‘C’ football finals with only the AIL rugby games, the League of Ireland soccer and the approaching inter-county GAA games still standing.

All clubs can continue training where applicable with a limit of 15 players involved but it now remains to be seen how the GAA react after pulling the plug on Monday afternoon, citing concerns over post-match celebrations and non-compliance with social distancing as major causes for the postponement of all club games at all levels.

GAA supporters will still have some action to look forward to in Wicklow. Davy Burke’s footballers welcome Antrim to Aughrim at 2pm on October 17 for their Allianz National Football League Division 4 clash while the following week they travel to Wexford to take on the home side providing nothing changes in terms of government decisions on upgrading the restrictions.

Eamonn Scallan’s hurlers will get their Christy Ring Cup campaign up and running with an away game against

Roscommon at 1.30pm in Dr Hyde Park on October 25, having warmed up with a tough challenge against Down in Abbotstown and with a clash against Meath in the pipeline.

Bray Wanderers meanwhile are closing in on the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division title having moved two points clear of the chasing pack with victory over UCD last weekend and with Drogheda slipping up.

Greystones RFC will welcome Wanderers to Dr Hickey Park this weekend after suffering defeat to MU Barnhall last weekend.

The country faces into an uncertain future and all games could go in the blink of an eye, but for now there is hope.
