WICKLOW ROVERS

Our junior competitive action kicked off on Friday night when the under-16’s travelled to Travers Insurance Park to take on Arklow Town in the Wicklow Advertiser Shield. After a tight tense game which ended 1-1 it was onto the nerve-racking penalty shootout.

Luke Dunne scored the Rovers goal in normal time. The penalty shootout proved to be a nail-biting affair with Rovers coming out on top, winning 8-7.

On Saturday our 12Bs took on league leaders Rathnew and this little team showed how much they’ve improved when they ran the unbeaten leaders close, losing out 3-2 in a five-goal thriller. Conor Martin and Naoise O’Dubhslaie hit the Rovers goals with Josh McCann and Ryan Fitzpatrick standing out in a good all-round team performance.

The under-14s went down 2-1 away to Avonmore, the lads took the lead when Daniel Kavanagh fired home. Rovers pushed forward in search of number two but got hit with a sucker punch in the second half when the home team levelled.

With five minutes remaining Avonmore scored what proved to be the winner. The lads will be a bit disappointed they took nothing from a game their performance deserved but they know a positive result next weekend will see them make the playoffs in the shield.

On Sunday the 13As went down 2-0 to a good Ashford Rovers side at Whitegates. The lads are not getting much luck at the moment but their day will come. They gave everything in this game but didn’t get the rub of the green.

The 13Bs recorded an excellent 3-2 away win over Glencormac, Adam O’Brien scored for the third successive game, Jack Lambe nabbed his fifth of the season with Calum Hodgkinson completing the Rovers tally to ensure all three points were brought home. Cameron Hughes and Joe Kenny put in a good shift in a good team performance.

The under-15s made it five wins from six shield games with a 3-0 away win over local rivals Rathnew at Shamrock Park. The lads put in a professional display to maintain their good run. Ryan McConnell, Peter Dunne and Jack Noble were all on the mark for Rovers. Cian Leonard and Kacper Lepek were both unlucky to see efforts hit the woodwork while Aaron Nolan preserved his clean sheet with a fantastic save in the dying seconds.

The club’s rescheduled AGM will be held on Tuesday, October 13 in the Pastoral Centre in the old De La Salle. The AGM was originally cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions. NEWTOWN JUNIORS

Luckily enough most of our teams got their games played last weekend and it was only the under-11 team who failed to see their action as their game away to Roundwood fell victim to the heavy rain that fell on Sunday morning.

Our under-8s (kindly sponsored by Kearns Construction) had a tremendous performance away to Wicklow Rovers White where among the players who starred were Noah Clarkson, Peter Heffernan, Jake McDonald and Callum Carthy.

Our under-9s likewise played very well away to Enniskerry in midweek and among the players who starred for the 9s were Adon Thampi, Alannah Gray, Rian Martin and Timothy Mariyasingarrayan. Thanks to Enniskerry F.C. for facilitating us with a midweek game as some of our under-9 squad were making their First Holy Communion at the weekend.

Good home win for the 10s (kindly sponsored by Shape Construction) at home to Glencormac United. Aaron Nolan and Conor Shevlin scored two very good goals and they along with Ryan Mahon and Rory O’Gorman were among the players who played well.

The under-12s suffered another home defeat, this time to a very good Ashford Rovers team. The team had their chances but the taking of one touch too many meant the chances went abegging. Aidan Heffernan did score a late consolation and among the players who starred were Kacey Kelly, Leon O’Connor and William Valentine.

The 14s braved the rain away to Arklow United and put in a decent display away to Arklow United but couldn’t avoid a 4-0 defeat. Amazing game in the Sportsfield from the 14s (kindly sponsored by Adrian Dunne Pharmacy) as they came from been 1-6 down at half-time to draw the game 6-all.

In a dismal first half from the

team where the only highlight was a cracking goal from Paudie Gammell. In an astonishing second half fightback Max Synnott and Aaron Cawley both scored twice while Samuel Falkiner also scored. Well done everyone.

The WDSL fixtures for the weekend of Sat.10th/Sun.11th October are as follows:

Under-8s at home to Arklow United, ko Sunday at 11.30am.

Under-9s fixture to be confirmed.

Under-10s at home to Coolboy Rangers, ko Sunday at 10.15am.

Under-11s away to Wicklow Rovers White, ko Saturday at 10am.

Under-12s away to St. Patricks, ko Sunday to be confirmed.

Under-13s at home to Shillelagh Utd, ko Saturday at 10am.

Under-14s away to Avonmore B, ko Sunday at 11.30am.

(FIXTURES and KO TIMES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE)

Three players from our club will celebrate a birthday in the coming week and they are Cian Foley from the under-9s, Sean Miranda from the under-11s and Aaron Hackett from the under-14s. Happy birthday lads from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C.

The FAI updated its Safer Return to Training and Safer Return to Playing Protocols in accordance with the new Government guidelines announced last week (September 17). We have since communicated this to all coaches and parents within the club. Most of the document is the same except for,

Spectators are now permitted to attend games but strictly in line with the Government’s Resilience and Recovery 2020-2021- Plan for Living with COVID-19 policy document.

Two groups/teams/pods can train at the same time providing there Is sufficient distance between both.

No person/s other than those stated above should be in and around the training area and that includes dog walkers and parents playing with young children.

The 2M social distancing protocol still applies especially for all parents (spectators) and players

(subs) who are on the sidelines at matches.

If anyone has any further enquiries regards the updated protocols, they can contact our COVID Compliance Officers Rory Hackett and Hughie Nolan.

The aim of Newtown Juniors F.C. on our return to training/ games is to provide a safe & enjoyable environment for everyone, once we adhere to the guidelines laid down.

We will be continuing to update all protocols as we get them from the FAI, and we will also be holding regular de-briefing meetings with all coaches and supervisors. Anyone who requires further information can contact any committee member of the club.

We are always on the lookout for volunteers to fill several roles within the club. Recently we have been busy renewing and reviewing our Club Safety Statement and our Club Risk assessments. We have also had several Volunteers who did their Safeguarding Refresher 1 and we await courses both at Safeguarding and at Child Welfare when certain restrictions are lifted. We would like to recruit a couple of MPs (Mandated Person) and DLP’s (Designated Liaison Person) to assist those already in these roles.

Those already in the roles are also coaches within the club and are on the executive committee but we would like volunteers to solely concentrate on these roles. Full training will be provided. The roles are not very time consuming and may interest someone who would like to volunteer in the club in some capacity.

Finally, on a sadder note Newtown Juniors F.C. would like to extend their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Hilda Crammond (Mine View Avoca) and Marie Gaule (Wexford/Roundwood) who both sadly passed away recently. May he rest in peace.

For further information on all matters Newtown Juniors F.C. please contact the secretary at 087 6987653 or by email to hughienolan@gmail.com and you can also follow the club on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
