The planned October and November talks of the Bray Cualann Historical Society, the local history society for Bray and North Wicklow, have been cancelled due to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases being reported.

A hitherto previous unknown Bray connection with the 1940 Battle of Britain has been revealed in a recently published book ‘A Bloody summer – The Irish at the Battle of Britain’ by Irish author Dan Harvey, who reveals that Squadron Leader Bill Igoe, Group 11 Biggin Hill, Controller, born in Nenagh Tipperary, was educated at Presentation College, Bray, and then went on to UCC to study Engineering. After the Battle of Britain he went to specialise in radar control with RAF Fighter Command and post WW2 had a very successful business career in Africa.

RATHMICHAEL COI

Archbishop’s Statement: The Church of Ireland’s two Archbishops have issued a joint statement to the members of the church, to mark Harvest and to reflect on the way ahead following the recent announcements of restrictions, to protect public health, in both jurisdictions on the island of Ireland: This time of the year is normally one of new beginnings for parish activities and, for many, a celebration of bringing the harvest home. The timeless rhythm of farming life and the unchanging pattern of the seasons is a source of reassurance in these challenging times. This is also a critical moment in our collective effort against the coronavirus. In following the call of our Lord to love our neighbours as ourselves, we all have a responsibility – and the power to make a difference – in containing the virus through our everyday choices and actions. A return to restrictions is a reminder of our own limitations and the complexities faced by those in political leadership. We, like countless others, pray that there will be brighter days ahead. This situation, as with many recorded in Scripture, will pass but till then, this is a journey on which we all must continue together. We thank

all members of the Church of Ireland, who have kept faith in these times and acknowledge that the church’s ministry of care never stopped even when the strongest lockdown measures were in place. Indeed, parishes across the island are to be commended on how they are responding creatively in sustaining services of worship and meeting personal and pastoral need. While more patience, compassion and discipline will be required in the coming months, we can be confident that this can be a time of renewal as we take up opportunities to be carriers of hope, to serve and care in local communities which will become more familiar to us. Over the shorter days and longer nights, we should consider how acts and words of kindness can continue to help front – line workers, who deserve our continued support and gratitude; people who will be facing renewed restrictions while living alone; and all who are especially at risk through age or another vulnerability.

What we can celebrate at Harvest can be brought into the months ahead: a faith in the God, whose love never fails his people; hope that the Earth and all within it is the Lord’s; and the love of a natural world where God offers to us the beauty of the lilies in the field and mourns the death of every sparrow – how much more do we matter to him.

Sunday Worship in Church: From this Sunday onward we hope to be back in the church for our services unless the Covid guidelines change. All the services will continue to be posted on the Parish Facebook page and on YouTube. This Sunday it is hoped to hold a 11 a.m. Harvest Festival Service in the church if the Level 3 restrictions are lifted by the government. The Guest preacher will be Canon Ricky Roundtree. Please watch the parish website for updates.

Rathmichael extra safety measures re Covid-19: Every Saturday the church and Erck hall are being sprayed with an extra high level disinfectant cleaner. This kills both airborne and surface viruses. It is effective for seven-days and ensures that the property is made safe for use each week. The parish school is using the same system. The church and Erck hall will be closed every Saturday between 12 mid-day and 1 p.m. to allow this process to take place.

Alphonsus and Columba church remains open for personal prayer till 7.30 p.m. each day and the Church of the Apostles till 4 p.m. each day. It is essential that a safe physical distance of two metres is scrupulously observed at all times in the church and in the church grounds. Surfaces in the church are disinfected at least three times during the day. Conformations scheduled for this month have had to be postponed. The Level 3 restrictions are set to last till October 9 see gov.ie. PARISH OF POWERSCOURT WITH KILBRIDE

Church Services: Shorter services of 20 to 30 minutes in duration now take place with recorded music used between or beneath readings and prayers as a reduction in time that people are together in an enclosed space reduces the risk of infection. Sunday Service times are as follows: 10 a.m. – Short Service of Worship in Kilbride; 11 a.m. – Short Service of Worship in Powerscourt; midday – Short Service of Worship in Powerscourt – this additional Sunday Morning Service is to cater for the restrictions in the number of people the church can facilitate at any one service.

Please observe two metres social distancing while waiting to be called to enter by the stewards, sanitise your hands on entry. Allocated places are marked by a coloured card and service sheet within the pews selected so please fill in your name and telephone number on this card so that we can recall who was present at every service in case Covid-19 is detected.

A One-Way System is in place to reduce risk and everyone should follow direction from the stewards after each service on how to exit the church buildings while maintaining distancing, one by one, from the front forward, through the allocated door. There is only one reader (apart from the Rector) at each service. St Patrick’s Church (Powerscourt) will hold 25 individuals per service. (This will increase if families attend – each family will have a full pew). St Brigid’s Church (Kilbride) and its attendance numbers fully fulfil the distancing requirements.

The HSE still recommend that people within the high risk groups i.e. those over-70s or and/with underlying medical conditions should not attend gatherings of more than six people. The current advice regarding this can be found at: hse.ie. Anyone, who is displaying symptoms of Covid-19 or who thinks they may have been in contact with someone suffering from it should not attend church services till medically advised that it is safe to do so.

Online Services: As you are no doubt aware, a large and varied range of Church Services are available online. Arising from last Fridays night government announcement raising Dublin City and county to Level 3 Lockdown, those who normally attend our church services and reside in the Dublin City/County area must not attend.

Services In-Church for this Sunday: 11.30 a.m. Family Harvest Celebration in St Patrick’s Powerscourt.

Online Sunday Worship: All Sunday Worship Services are available on the Joint Parishes of Powerscourt and Kilbride YouTube channel

Please note that the minimum numbers that allowed into each of these churches with a clear two metre clear spacing between them are 22 individuals for St Mary’s and 16 individuals for St Mochonog’s. A greater number can be accommodated when some family members who reside in the same house sit together. The following Mass attendance rules apply: One way system in the church, entry by the front door and exit by the side door. Sanitise your hands on entry and exit. Keep two metres apart at all times which is also important in the church grounds before and after Masses and Funerals. Holy Communion will be distributed at the end of Mass as your exit. Stewards will be on duty at all Masses so please follow their instructions. Arising from the recent government decision raising Dublin City and county to Level 3 Lockdown, those who normally attend our church and reside in the Dublin City/County area must not attend our Masses till Dublin City and county reverts to Level 2.

Webcam in St March’s Church: We are delighted to announce that a webcam has now been installed the church for the purpose of broadcasting the Holy Mass over the internet. This will be of tremendous benefit and comfort to those parishioners at home and abroad and especially the sick and the elderly. CCTV: Please be aware that there are CCTV cameras in the car park as well in the church. This is to enhance the safety of all those who use the car park and to assist in the prevention of anti-social behaviour and ensuring that people are social distancing as it essential outside the church.

Maintaining Contact With Our Parishioners: The Enniskerry Parish website has been updated so that our parish community can tune in and engage in a Spiritual Communion – go to enniskerryparish.ie and click on the Daily Mass link on the home page. More resources will be added in the coming days and weeks including Mass resources and spiritual links for all.

ENNISKERRY HISTORY SOCIETY

Members, supporters, and friends of the Enniskerry History Society, which meets under the guidance of its president, John Callan, are reminded that all lectures remain suspended in line with current government restrictions on indoor gatherings.

In the meantime members and their supporters can catch up on their reading with ‘No Hope – The ‘peculiar theories’ of James Fintan Lalor’ by Shankill based author James P Bruce, reveals how in 1847 and 1848 a little-known farmer named James Fintan Lalor wrote a series of newspaper articles in which he outlined his vision for Ireland after the Great Famine. Although they have been reprinted and republished many times since, till now there has been no systematic study of the principles and proposals that Lalor expounded.

In this book, James Bruce considers Lalor’s brief career as a writer and offers new insights into his treatment of the national and land questions. By elucidating Lalor’s ideas on these questions, exploring possible influences on his thinking, and assessing the impact of his writings on his contemporaries, the author seeks to address what he regards as two deficiencies in the historiography.

The first of these is the tendency to assign only a minor, supporting role to Lalor during the brief heyday of Young Ireland. Academic studies typically portray him as little more than a catalyst in the radicalisation of figures like John Mitchel, rather than as a profoundly original thinker in his own right.

The second issue is the commonly held perception of Lalor’s proposals on land tenure as foreshadowing the creation of a ‘peasant proprietary’ later in the century. The author argues that Lalor advocated a much more radical plan that would link his two primary objectives: the creation of a sovereign Irish republic, and transfer of control over landholding from a small number of landlords to the entire Irish people.

By comparing and contrasting Lalor’s theories with those of earlier figures such as Thomas Paine and James ‘Bronterre’ O’Brien, this ground-breaking book broadens the perspective on Lalor and his writings beyond the context of Irish nationalism, highlighting the fact that Lalor’s unique contribution to Irish radical thought merits a more prominent place in nineteenth-century intellectual history than it has hitherto received.
