Talented teens from inclusive drama group bring Romeo and Juliet to Whale

-

A 35-strong cast of young people, who are part of a local inclusive drama group, are to perform William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet on the Whale Theatre stage in Greystones later this month.

Founded in 2018 by Ciarán Coogan and Aideen Walton, the Making Waves Youth Theatre’s very first production, back in 2019, was Juliet of Verona, adapted from Romeo and Juliet and directed by Ciarán.

Choosing Romeo and Juliet for their seventh production pays homage to that as the registered charity celebrate its fifth anniversary.

A lot has changed since those early days of just 10 regular members and two volunteer facilitators. Sponsored by Ross McParland and the Whale Theatre, the community initiative hosts weekly drama workshops at Tiglin’s Coolnagreina in Greystones.

Making Waves has gone from strength to strength, expanded its team and membership and established itself as much-loved resource for young people in Greystones and its environs – even prevailing through the Covid period through Zoom workshops.

The 35 cast members for Romeo and Juliet are all agd 12 to 10.

The play is directed by Ciarán and has been adapted by Aideen, with three of the original Making Waves members on the production team – Katie Lacey-Curtis (Assistant Director), Archer Bradshaw (lighting) and Cíara Short (music and sound).

The show opens on Friday, February 23 at the Whale Theatre with a 7.30pm showing. There is another evening performance at the same time the following day, with a 3.30pm matinee on Sunday, February 25 closing the production’s run.

Tickets cost €15 and are available at whaletheatre.ie
