New sponsor for Wicklow Half Marathon

- By MYLES BUCHANAN

CODLING Wind Park has been announced as the new title sponsor of this year’s Wicklow Half Marathon and 10k run, taking place on March 24.

In 2019 around 1,700 runners, joggers and walkers took part in the event before it was suspended for two years due to Covid. This year organisers expect over twice that number, 3,500 people, to enter the event.

The event, which will start on the quays of Wicklow Harbour, travels along a scenic route with stunning coastal views before finishing up in the unique courtyard of Wicklow’s historic gaol.

Race Director Mick Foy says the county’s fantastic scenery is a huge draw for people but so also is the warmth of the Wicklow welcome.

“The engagement and support from the people of Wicklow for this event has been nothing short of amazing, creating an atmosphere that participants and spectators really cherish. We are eagerly anticipating the return of people who have participated previously and looking forward to meeting people who will be joining us for the first time.

“We are also thrilled to welcome our new sponsors Codling Wind Park on board for the next exciting chapter in the event’s development. The company has shown a real interest in engaging with the local community and contributing to the success of local events, just like this one.

“The fact we are on course to double our numbers over the last couple of years is testament to its growing popularity.

“We are inviting athletes of all levels, from seasoned marathoners to enthusiastic first timers, to partake in a day of challenge, camaraderie, and personal achievement, in the most scenic of settings. We would encourage anyone planning on taking part to register as soon as possible as we are anticipating the event will be a sell-out.”

Codling Wind Park Project Director Scott Sutherland said the company was delighted to support an event that is quickly becoming a fixture in the local athletic and social calendar.

“We were hugely impressed with the support the event receives from the people of Wicklow, not just from the 70 or so volunteers from various clubs who will be helping out on the day but from right across the community. This partnership underlines our support and commitment to sustainability, community, and the promotion of an active and healthy lifestyle.

“The event is not just a wonderful way to promote Wicklow town and all it has to offer but it is also of course a great way for people to socialise, to exercise and to have fun. I know ten of our own employees have been training hard for it and are looking forward to taking part. We wish them, all the participants and their supporters the very best for a great day out.”

Many participants in the event, which starts from 10am on Sunday, March 24, also raise funds for charity and there is a fundraising platform which can be set up during registration.
