Boatloads of school students ‘Get Going’ with rowing programme
Secondary students in Arklow recently had the opportunity to dive into the world of rowing thanks to the Get Going Get Rowing programme, which has been integrated into their PE curriculum.
Coaches from Rowing Ireland visited three local schools – St Mary’s College, Glenart College and Arklow CBS – delivering a comprehensive four-to-six-week rowing experience to approximately 250 students.
A rowing event held on Wednesday, February 7, marked a milestone in the initiative, being the first time it was hosted in Wicklow.
“It was a fantastic opportunity for boys to represent their school who wouldn’t typically play a traditional team sport,” said Declan Kennedy, PE teacher at Arklow CBS.
Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Aoife Flynn Kennedy said: “The Get Going Get Rowing programme opens doors for students to explore rowing within their school’s PE schedule, providing a unique and engaging experience.”
Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, Emer O’Gorman, highlighted the programme’s impact on student participation and physical activity stating: “The Get Going Get Rowing programme demonstrates our commitment to promoting active lifestyles and offering opportunities for youths to explore alternative sports.”
Wicklow Sports & Recreational Partnership Coordinator Aisling Hubbard commended the dedication of both students and coaches and thanked Rowing Ireland for their support and collaboration in delivering the rowing initiative to schools in Arklow.
The event concluded with Get Going Get Rowing Leinster Coordinator Aoife Byrne presenting medals to the top performers in each category, recognising their outstanding achievement and participation in this programme.
