Wicklow was abuzz for World Book Day

- By EOIN MAC RAGHNAILL

Avid readers from across Wicklow celebrated World book Day at a series of literary-themed events.

Staff and students from St Mary’s & St Gerard’s School in Enniskerry got into the spirit by dressing up as their favourite characters, with the staff theme of Little Miss /Mr Men giving pupils plenty of giggles.

The morning began with an event in the hall, followed by a book fair, which exceeded its sales target of €250, resulting in a well-deserved homework pass for 6th class!

After the fair, classes took part in zooms with authors and illustrators, and got to spend time reading their books and enjoying book-themed games and artwork.

“Pupils loved wearing their costumes and friends identifying who they were dressed as,” Principal Deirdre Morgan said.

“One of our pupils, Jason, presented a home-made ‘Book Box’ to the school. We will hang this box at the front of the school and use it for book donations.”

Children dressed as their favourite literary characters had a ball at Arklow Library, where a treasure hunt was hosted by library staff, who donned their own costumes, including witches and even Waldo.

Coláiste Bhríde in Carnew celebrated World Book Day with a series of fun and engaging events.

Students organised a quiz for All Saints National School’s senior classes, which was won by Mary-Kate MacDonnell, then held their own ‘Caught Reading’ quiz.

“Thank you to everyone for their enthusiastic participation in our WBD celebrations, organised by our ‘Rather be Reading’ class who can be very proud of what they have achieved,” teacher Karen Murphy said.
