Four-year deal for Liam Scales

‘I just want to play football’

- ANDREW RYAN

LIAM SCALES has penned a new contract at Celtic and wants to use the momentum to help the Bhoys retain the Scottish Premiership.

The Barndarrig boy has had his best season since moving to Glasgow from Shamrock Rovers, having made 41 appearances in all competitions including 31 in the league and six in the Champions League.

The 25-year-old was named in the Scottish Premiership Team of the Season and further reward was a new four-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2028.

Reacting to the extension, Scales told club media: “I’m delighted to get it done. I’ve wanted it and now I can focus on the games coming up.

“I spoke to the manager earlier in the year about it and he made it clear that he wanted me here, which is a big deal for every player when they’re signing a new contract.

“I just want to play football, and this is the ideal place for me to do that. It’s a dream come true, it’s where I want to be.

“Playing regularly at this intensity and at this level has improved me hugely as a player. Hopefully as I continue to play at this level I can keep improving.”

The Ireland international has now turned his attention towards the Scottish Premiership run-in.

Brendan Rodgers’ team are currently three points clear of Rangers at the top of the table with three games left to play.

They face their fierce rivals on Saturday afternoon and will meet them again in the Scottish Cup final on May 25.

Scales added: “I know I’ve done well this season, but I don’t want to sit on that. I know that I need to continue to improve and perform to a high standard to keep that shirt.

“I want to win as much as I can and that’s our goal every year, to win leagues and cups.

“But we have to focus on one game at a time just now and hopefully that’ll take us to where we want to be.”
