Pswansong for the current generation of the 3008 compact crossover is the most intriguing in the range. The 1.6 four-cylinder plug-in hybrid automatic promises hybrid petrol efficiency and 300bhp variable all-wheel-drive at €49,400. This model uses a 13.2 kWh battery and promises a charge to full using a Mode3/Type 2 cable in 1 hour and 45 minutes.

The electrification sees the modest 1.6-litre engine produce a muscular 300bhp, reaching 100km/h in 6.1 seconds, while low WLTP CO2 emissions mean a sensible €170 road tax. Peugeot claims 63km of pure electric driving on a full charge. I managed roughly 48km before the battery was depleted and reverting to full petrol mode.

Keep the 3008 PHEV charged up and the reasons for its sales success shines through, and a facelifted model arrives this spring. Prices range from €31,390 to €44,360 (including the SEAI grant).
