The Mercedes-Benz electrification programme has caught up with the jumbo GLE 350 DE 4Matic SUV. The E abbreviation references the credible claim of a 66-mile range once the GLE is fully charged up. It is priced from €86,930 and limited to five seats, with the 31.2kWh battery taking up rear luggage space. Versions without plug-in hybrid power can be had as a seven-seater.

With the diesel version, buyers of this luxury SUV can achieve 40mpg on diesel power alone. The other benefit in utilising the four-cylinder 2.0-litre diesel engine with 320hp and 700Nm is the GLE’s strong performance. Reaching 100km is achieved in a brisk 6.8 seconds, and the Band 1 road tax is just €140.
