Oliver’s trojan work honoured by school
GREEN FLAG RAISED AT CALLYSTOWN N.S.
OLIVER KIRWAN had the honour of raising Callystown National School's third green flag. The school was delighted to recognise Oliver's trojan work for Clogherhead Development Group in keeping the village looking so beautiful.
The school celebrated its achievement at an assembly in wonderful sunshine. A large crowd of parents turned up for the occasion and was entertained by songs and drama performed by the school's pupils.
The Green School committee spoke of the many projects they had run over the previous two years, while Mr Mc Ginnity, the school principal, congratulated the committee for its work in earning the school the prestigious flag.
Mr. Mc Ginnity made special mention of Tom King, caretaker, and Breda O Connell, teacher, for their efforts in coordinating the work of the pupils.
Oliver Kirwan received a loud countdown from the kids as he raised the flag and the principal paid tribute to Oliver for his work around the village.
He said that when it comes to work, that some talk the talk, but Oliver definitely walks the walk. The assembly finished with a rousing chorus of a water song composed by the pupils of 5th class.
The school has worked for two years on the conservation of water and raising awareness among the school community of its importance. The school held surveys, ran slogan and art competitions, and invited speakers to the school all based on the water theme.
The school also fitted new push taps and water displacement units in all of its cisterns to reduce consumptions. Throughout the two years of work, the consumption of water has been reduced by 15%.
As one flag is raised the school will start work on earning its fourth in September. The next flag will be based on the theme of travel. But for the moment, the community of Callystown N.S. enjoyed basking in the success of its water flag.
