BLAGGING THEIR WAY TO ROME

- By Margaret Roddy

Local DCU students Ailis Brassil from Point Road, Dundalk and Thomas Dorian from Grangebellew are set to turn heads as they attempt to make their way to Rome dressed as Alice and the Mad Hatter in the college’s Beg, Steal or Borrow Challenge in aid of the Irish Cancer Society and Movember.

The Beg Borrow Steal fund raiser involves DCU students in teams of two racing across Europe to reach their destination city with no money whatsoever.

This year’s destination is Rome and the students must rely on the kindness of strangers and transport services to make their way to the Italian city in 24 hours.

Ailis and Thomas are both first year students on the St Pat’s campus at DCU and as they commute using Matthews Coaches, they have not been able to get involved in any of the college’s clubs or societies so they decided to take part in this challenge instead.

Following a dream which Thomas had of travelling on Matthews’ Coaches dressed as the Mad Hatter, they decided to dress up as the Lewis Carroll characters as they attempt to make their way across Europe with no money.

‘We thought we might get people’s attention quicker if we were dressed up as two eejits,’ confessed Thomas.

They have already held a number of fundraising events and are hoping to hid their target of €2,000 as they collect donations on their travels. They leave Dublin on Thursday when they will find out what cities make up the two surprise checkpoints that they have to travel through en route to Rome.
