Gardaí in Drogheda are investigating a shocking incident in which the passenger window of a car was smashed and a handbag stolen while the female driver was still in the car.

The terrifying smash and grab happened on Thursday, January 26th at around 8.50am in the Mell area of town.

The female occupant of the car had just parked the vehicle and was preparing to go to work when the incident happened.

She was sitting in her car when an unknown male approached on foot, smashed the passenger window, took her handbag and ran off.

On the same date just a short time later, at approximately 10am, a woman was walking through the Aldi carpark on the Cement Road also had her bag stolen.

The woman was on her way to her car when she noticed a man approaching her.

The man walked by the injured party and as he did so he grabbed her handbag and ran off.

Gardaí believe the two incidents may be connected and would like to hear from anyone who was in the Mell area around this time and who may have seen a lone male acting suspiciously or loitering around the area.

‘We would appreciate any help from the public who might have been in this area on the morning in question and who might have seen this man or noticed anything suspicious, we would ask they contact us here in Drogheda Garda Station on (041) 9874200,’ said a spokesperson for the gardaí
