Juveniles do club proud

-

GREENHILLS juvenile players Megan Devin, Sophie Thornberry and Ciara Floyd came of age last week when competing in the National Senior Ladies Trips Final.

The decider was held in Lordship where the trio faced Andrea Duff, Mary McElearney and Ann Marie Duff of Louth BC in a match over nine ends under IIBA rules.

The bowling and scoring was of a very high standard from Andrea’s team as they the first two ends on the trot to move five up.

Megan’s team, who hadn’t qualified for a national final before, looked very nervous, but they got to grips with the mat in the fourth end to narrow the deficit to three.

However, that progress was checked immediately as Andrea’s team stormed five up once again. The prospects didn’t look good at this stage, but in the seventh end Megan’s team showed a bit of backbone, cutting the deficit back down to three shots.

They showed their inexperience in the next end, though, taking the wrong options and letting in their opponents to score heavily and go eight up with one end left.

It was always going to be a struggle against the more experienced senior team, but overall the Greenhills trio put in a gallant effort to keep the score down.

Gerry O’Hare, Oriel Zone convener, stated that it was a great achievement for the juniors to qualify in the senior grade and they will gain great experience from all the games they had played which will stand to them in the future.
