points, a brace from Shortall and one each for Sean Keogh and David Toner. That left the minimum between the sides, and although Trim added a point, Curraha were level entering the final quarter.

It was the Trim men who produced the stronger finish, though, with three points and then a goal, and that effectively put paid to Curraha hopes.

Shortall took his tally to 1-5 before the finish with his side’s second goal. too much for the home side in this Corn na Boinne tie on Sunday morning.

Ronan Breslin and Mark Allen struck with late goals to give manager Padraic Coyle a winning start with the Bohermeen outfit.

Syddan were level twice in the final quarter, but they only scored once after Gary Farrelly hit an equalising point on the 54-minute mark.

Ciaran Farrelly saved a penalty from Ronan Galligan 60 seconds later, but in the goalmouth scramble that followed referee Peter Sheridan whistled for a second spot-kick. This time Breslin made no mistake to leave his side leading 1-9 to 1-6.

Conor Smyth then added a point for St Ultan’s before Kevin Traynor cancelled that out at the other end with his side’s last score. In added time the visitors tagged on a point, and then a goal in the last action of the game.

Syddan were short a number of regulars and struggled for scores throughout. They led following points in the opening quarter from Gary Farrelly (two frees) and Fiachra Ross. However, they failed to add to their tally for the remainder of the half and four successive points left St Ultan’s leading 0-4 to 0-3 at the break.

That lead stretched to 0-7 to 0-4 by the 40th minute, but then Michael Fedigan set up Graham Garland for an equalising goal. Gary Farrelly had the teams level on two further occasions after that, but the hosts had no answer to St Ultan’s late surge.
