the last end.

In a nail-biting finish Tom played his last bowl, striking the jack over to Paddy bowls, losing out by two shots to his opponent unfortunately at the end of a sporting encounter.

In the doubles match Jack Howell and Peter Woods were pitted against Margaret Lawlor and Antony Cunningham and the visitors got off to the perfect start, taking the first two ends, and after five ends they had increased their advantage to five.

The hosts’ skip Antony’s team were playing poorly, but they eventually hit back in the seventh end with two superb back-hand draw shots to the head, trimming the deficit to two.

Jack’s team attacked the head in the eighth end, increasing the lead to four, and then went six up with two ends remaining.

Antony’s team slashed the deficit by a half but still needed three shots from the last end to drawm, and in the end it was Jack’s team who pulled six clear once more to complete a comfortable win.

In the trips match the visitors were very nervous and struggled to settle into the game, and not surprisingly the home team went ahead by five shots after four ends.

Greenhills needed to respond quickly and they did just that, cutting down the deficit to two shots, and the visitors’ skip Tom Devin then saw his team level the match after the seventh end.

Greenhills regained the lead momentarily in the eighth end, two up, but the hosts hit back to share the spoils.

The last match of the night was the rinks, played over nine ends, and first blood went to Greenhills as they went three up after two ends and four up after three.

Geraldines hit back to level after four ends, but visitors’ skip Eugene Mc Kenna’s team found another gear and regained their lead - two up after five.

The hosts pulled one back, but Eugene’s team coped well under pressure and rallied well in the remaining ends to complete an impressive five-shot win and the overall nine points on the night.

The Oriel Zone rinks will be held in Philipstown Community Centre on February 19th and Greenhills members’ pick-up times are 7.30pm (Patrick Street) and 7.40pm (Monasterboice).
