Sadhbh named as a finalist in Doodle 4 Google
A Ballymakenny College student has been named as a finalist in the International Doodle 4 Google competition.
Sadhbh McDonough is a second year student in the school and couldn’t believe her luck when her entry was chosen as one of the finalists in the prestigious competition. THE theme this year was ‘If I could create anything it would be......’ and Sadhbh’s colourful ‘Zentangle’ entry really caught the judges’ eye.
‘We’re absolutely thrilled for Sadhbh, it’s a fantastic achievement,’ said art teacher Lynn Brown. ‘We get to go to google headquarters too which is real highlight.’
Online voting for the finalists will take place from Tuesday February 7th to Tuesday, February 21st and teacher Lynn is asking people in Drogheda to show their support for the talented young local artist and go online to cast a vote for Sadbh.
Sadhbh is one of 75 finalists choosen from thousands of entries received throughout the country. The public are being asked to vote on these finalists to help select the five class group winners and from these the overall winner will be chosen by the judges.
Staff and students at Ballymakenny college are keeping their fingers crossed that Sadhbh’s eyecatching design will be a hit with the public and the judges.
The doodles on the google page began back in 1998 when Larry and Sergey, Google’s founders, placed a stick figure drawing behind the second ‘o’ in the word Google as a message to users that they were ‘out of the office’ attending a music and art festival. As a result a turkey was added on Thanksgiving in 1998 and two pumpkins for the ‘o’s appeared for Halloween in October of 1999.
From there the idea of decorating the logo to mark significant cultural moments was born and since the initial stickman appeared there have been over 2,000 doodles on google’s home pages around the world.
