Cowardly hatchet attack on man (86)

GARDAI HUNT TWO MEN AFTER THREE INCIDENTS IN LESS THAN AN HOUR

- by FIONA MAGENNIS

GARDAI are investigating three vicious attacks in which a hatchet was used to threaten terrified victims, many of them pensioners.

In one of the incidents, on George’s Street, an 86-year-old was set upon as he drove his car into a communal back lane.

He got out of the car to lock the gate behind him and as he went to the gate two men appeared in front of him wearing hoodies and dark clothing.

A hatchet was produced and one of the men demanded the pensioner hand over his wallet.

When the man explained he had no wallet on him he was threatened again with the hatchet. The man again said he had nothing of value on him and when he did so the pair leaned in and rested the hatchet on the victim in a threatening manner before eventually fleeing the scene.

Gardaí believe the three incidents, which all happened within the space of an hour last Thursday night, may be connected. They all happened between 10pm and 10.30pm. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Drogheda Garda Station on (041) 9874200.

GARDAI are investigating three vicious attacks in which an axe was used to threaten terrified victims, many of them pensioners.

The first incident happened on Thursday night when a group of women were set upon as they made their way home from bingo.

A short time later an 86-year-old was threatened and had a hatchet held up against him by thugs who refused to believe he had no valuables to hand over.

A female takeaway delivery driver was also attacked and robbedat axe point after she was called out to make a delivery in the Ashfield estate.

The horrific series of attacks began shortly before 10pm as three women left bingo.

The group were making their way from Bolton Street across Patrick Street when they noticed two men running along the bank.

The women tried to walk faster after becoming suspicious of the men. However the two attackers quickened their pace and walked alongside them before overtaking the women.

One of them waved what is said to have been a hammer or an axe at the group and demanded they hand over their handbags.

The shocked women were left terrified and one handbag was given to the pair.

A short time later, at ten past ten, a call was made placing an order for delivery of a Chinese Takeaway to the Ashfield estate. A female delivery driver went out with the delivery and when she arrived in the estate she got out of the car and was approached by two men, one of whom was carrying an axe.

The pair demanded money and took the food and a handbag from the front passenger seat of the car and ran away.

At 10.30pm, an 86-year-old pensioner was driving his car into a communal back lane on George’s Street.

He got out of the car to lock the gate behind him and as he went to the gate two men appeared in front of him wearing hoodies and dark clothing.

A hatchet was produced and one of the men demanded the pensioner hand over his wallet.

When the man explained he had no wallet on him he was threatened again with the axe. The man said he had nothing of value on him and when he did so the pair leaned in and rested the axe on the victim in a threatening manner before eventually fleeing the scene.

Gardaí believe the three incidents, which all happened within the space of an hour, may be connected and would like to hear from anyone who may have seen anything that would be of relevance or who have any information in relation to these terrifying attacks.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Drogheda Garda Station on (041) 9874200.
